We’re officially here, the end of the 2018! Thanks for following along all year long with our weekly SubModern Reports. We’ve had a banner year in this corner of the Musicverse and it’s always exciting to see how it all shakes out at the end. Let’s all find out on the SubModern 2018 Year End Charts…
Congratulations to one of NYC’s finest (and one of the stars of Meet Me In The Bathroom), the one and only Interpol, who returned strong this year with their sixth album, which spawned “The Rover,” our #1 SubModern single of 2018! Album honors though head down the east coast to Baltimore with the seventh record 7 from the longtime duo Beach House. Congratulations to both of them, as well as the numerous others artists, fresh faces and indie veterans alike, found in the top tens of both charts, including Albert Hammond Jr., Metric, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and Superorgansism. Of course many other fantastic acts also appear on one chart or the other, as you can see in the top 50 singles and top 25 albums listed below.
As always, we also pay tribute to the fine labels who brought us all of these tunes throughout the course of the year. It’s another year at the top for Sub Pop, with that big Beach House release, as well as the aforementioned Rolling Blackouts (who had the #2 album), the ever-interesting Father John Misty, King Tuff, and capping off 2018 with J. Mascis. Congrats to Scott Perlewitz, Michelle Feghali, and all on their continued success! A big thumbs up to the rest of the year’s top ten labels: Domino at #2, Matador at #3, Merge at #4, Polyvinyl at #5, Columbia at #6, Atlantic at #7, Warner Brothers at #8, Epitaph at #9, and Carpark at #10.
Thank you all who contribute to what we collectively do and care about here! Whether you make music, promote music, play it on the radio, write about it, or just listen to it, we’re all part of this wonderful ecosystem of discovering what’s new and exciting. I wish you all a joyous holiday season and new year! Let’s do it all again in 2019! I’ll be back here with out first charts of the year on January 9th. Now, I’ll leave you with my top albums and songs of 2018…
