Glen Campbell
Singer-songwriter Glen Campbell has passed away at the age of 81. The Country/Pop singer earned 21 Top 40 hits in his career including “Rhinestone Cowboy,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” In a statement, his family said, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and legendary singer and guitarist, Glen Travis Campbell, at the age of 81, following his long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.”
Before his own solo career, Campbell was a member of the legendary “Wrecking Crew” of studio musicians in the early ’60s and played on countless classic songs. He filled in as part of the Beach Boys’ touring lineup before hitting it big with his own tunes. Throughout his career, he sold over 45 million records. Campbell hosted his own TV variety show from 1969-1972 as well. In 2011, he announced his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s and revealed he planned to retire, releasing his final album of original music and going on a farewell tour. His last record, Adios, was primarily a covers album and came out earlier in 2017.
Glen is survived by his wife, Kim Campbell of Nashville; their three children, Cal, Shannon and Ashley; his children from previous marriages, Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane, and Dillon; ten grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren; sisters Barbara, Sandra, and Jane; and brothers John Wallace “Shorty” and Gerald.
