Travis X. Loughran lives, eats and breathes radio. From imaging to production to programming, he’s paid his dues, worked his way up and is now lovin’ life in the Bay Area as part of the programming team at KYLD (WiLD 94.9) in San Francisco. He’s one of the format’s hot young programming talents who understands both the science of programming and the fun that goes along with it!
Travis X. Loughran’s radio career started at KSRO in Santa Rosa as a part-timer in 1996. His first full-time job was working at KBOS in Fresno hosting overnights and producing the “Hart & Coffee Morning Show.” He spent nearly five years there, and by the time Travis left he had become both Music Director and Imaging Director. Next stop was KBMB in Sacramento where he spent about a year as Program Director. Then he moved back to the Bay Area to become Creative Director at KYLD in San Francisco. He spent a couple of years back in the bay before moving to New York to work at WQHT (Hot 97) as Morning Show Production Director while working closely with legendary Production Director Alan Wilson producing and imaging the station. A year later the opportunity came up for Travis to head home and program again for Clear Channel. This time he returned to KYLD as Music Director/Assistant Program Director, a position he’s been holding down for nearly four years and he’s since added similar duties at sister Hot AC KIOI. eQB presents excerpts from the May FMQB magazine Rhythm Q&A: KYLD (WiLD 94.9) /San Francisco APD/MD Travis X. Loughran
“I always felt very lucky to start my career with an awesome group of people like Mark Adams, Jerry Hart, Sherry Knight, Marcus D, CK, Mickey Freeman, Sana G, Dennis Martinez and G-man just to name a few.”
“When you are your market’s Top 40/Hit Music option your overall station sound is linked hand in hand with the times most popular music styles.”
“Wild 94.9 has a strong music position and a strong Morning Show. Beyond that, I think the Bay Area is a very special place and we do our best to represent that on the air, on the streets and on the web.”
“Viral marketing is very exciting. I love trying to keep up with the trends and sometimes it’s nearly impossible. It all moves so quick. One day it’s Myspace and before you know it you can hit me on Twitter. It’s our job to stay on top of the trends and put ourselves in a position to communicate with our listeners where THEY are.”
“The Rhythm format is very healthy, healthier than it has been in a while. There was a time when it felt Hip-Hop/Rap dominated the charts. Today, Rhythm/Pop artists are the core of the format.”
“I can play a new record and have the phones light up instantly, then within a week be the most requested song on the station. We debuted our new Morning Show and it went #1 18-34 within its second full week on the air. Radio is healthy. Radio reacts. Radio Works.”
