What memories (pros and cons) do you have of starting a new school year?
Buster Satterfield, WIOQ: Loved getting the new clothes. The worst was having to go to bed early.
Big Rob, KKPL/KMAX: Mostly seeing friends I hadn’t seen all summer. scouting who was in your class that year, who the cute girls were etc., ya know, the important stuff. The worst part was, and still is with my son, adjusting to the alarm clock going off so damn early. Jeremy Rice, WXXL: I remember being excited to go to the radio station after school. I would take the bus from high school to 98PXY which was in downtown Rochester. Being a teenager and working at a radio station was the coolest thing ever. Jonathan Shuford, WRVW: I was a weirdo that enjoyed school. I liked being back around my friends and learning new things. It was something I always looked forward to each year. Valentine, WBHT: Never like school. I hated sitting still for that long and my attention span was, and still is, ZERO. So the worst part was the end of summer, sunsets after 8, and sleeping in. The best part was knowing that once that first day was over, you’re one day closer to another summer. Rich Davis, KDWB: Seeing friends that you haven’t seen all summer, always looked forward to that. Rick Vaughn, KENZ: Team sports starting up. My other fond memory is that I didn’t have to work on the farm anymore, which was a lot of work during the summer. Not so hot, this one English teacher in high school who taught at every level…not a fun course. |
Matt Johnson, WPLW: I don’t know it was so long ago! Jammer, WEZB: I hated Grade School but liked High School. Toby Knapp, WASH: As a kid, I loved seeing what was on the School Supply list every year. I kid you not – from Elementary til about 6th grade, this was a highlight. In Jr. High, it was getting your schedule and teachers and class period assignments. High School? Meeting all the new Freshmen and new students transferring in. Now? I look forward to my daughter Kyla’s move-in day and the road trips and the method-to-the-madness of moving her in to Emerson in Boston. Bob Patrick, WXLK: The worst was 2nd Grade, on the 1st day, I missed the bus then had to ride my bike to school. About a mile away my bike chain broke so I had to walk the rest of the way. Then I realized I had no pencil and had to walk all the way home to get them! UGH The best was senior year and just knowing it was going to be the best yet, and it was! Jana Sutter, WXXL: I went to four high schools in three different states, so I was always the new kid. The good thing is that it set me up for life and a vagabond radio career. The bad thing is that at the time it didn’t thrill me much. Jon Zellner, iHeartMedia: Pros: new lunch box, new notebooks, new teachers. Cons: waking up early. |
Brian Mack, iHeartMedia: Con: High School always gave me massive anxiety as schoolwork/hockey season(s) demanded a lot. Pros: College on the other hand, I couldn’t wait to get back! Erik Bradley, B96: Always liked the back-to-school vibe. Loved the new school supplies and the new clothes. The worst was having to wake up early. I just love sleeping in. Drew Heyman, WHYI: The worst was the night before and being all nervous for the first day of school. The best was being in class with friends and passing around notes lots of good times. Mike O’Donnell, WKRZ: Getting back and seeing the friends I haven’t seen all summer, also just getting out of the house and doing something. Not so good, we lived a within a mile radius of every school I attended, just inside the bus line, so I had to walk my entire life to school. Guy Zapoleon, Zapoleon Consulting: Worst was moving from Houston to Stamford, CT and asked to introduce ourselves in 7th grade. With a thick accent I said, “I’m Guy Zapoleon from Texas,” which was received by a collective groan. But the good news was when I discovered Cousin Brucie and WABC. Best was going to 10th grade at Birmingham High in Van Nuys, CA with all my friends from my apartment complex. Dom Theodore, Radio Animal Media Strategies: I hated the end of summer. Still do. |
