What traits best exemplify your leadership qualities?
Orlando Davis, WLLD: Ability to lead, and motivate but learning and listening lengthen your career.
Valentine, WBHT: Transparency and no sugar-coating is my style. Heather Deluca, WSJO: Willingness to collaborate (there are no bad ideas) and being a good listener. R Dub!, Z90/Magic 92.5: I rule with an iron fist! Just kidding. I strive to be inspiring, competitive, innovative, challenging, positive, honest, and empathetic. Rick Vaughn, KENZ: I’m always consistent and fair. They understand the expectations, and everyone is treated fairly. Rich Davis, KDWB: I highly value these qualities and believe a staff deserves this kind of treatment: respect, integrity, communication, and empathy. Lee Abrams, mediavisions: Steady, high standards, low BS, encouraging, enabling, teaching, and exploring. Erik Bradley, B96: I’d hope for things like organized, fair, strategic, thorough, honest, and communicative.

Adam Rivers, WKCI / WKSS: Never ask anyone to do something that I wouldn’t myself do (or do first). Derrick Cole, WAEB: Ability to adapt. Change always happens, from trends or talent and being able to adapt with it is important to. Bartel. WKTU: The ability to communicate and work within a team atmosphere.
Brian Mack, iHeartMedia: Clear communication, a strong record, love for your team, ability to change your mind, an ever-changing winning strategy, empowering, not controlling. Toby Knapp, WASH: I remind management they are indeed sane daily. Dom Theodore, Radio Animal Media Strategies: I’ve always tried to lead the way I was led when I had some of my biggest successes. Hire the best people, inspire them with a bold mission, give them the autonomy they need to win, hold them accountable for the results, and give them a chance to develop and work a plan if a course correction is needed. It’s amazing what can be accomplished with this approach. The problem now is we have too many “managers” and not enough “leaders.” Managers manage things, leaders lead people. We need more LEADERS! Matt Johnson, WPLW: I’m about leading from the front. |
Mike O’Donnell, WKRZ: I’m a reasonable perfectionist, I try to lead by example and would not ask someone to do what I wouldn’t do (and I’ve done it all), and I try to be flexible when possible. Buster, WIOQ: Lead by example. I’m always here for my staff 24/7 for support. Jon Zellner, iHeartMedia: Managing with love and trust versus fear and doubt and surrounding myself with talented programmers and talent who love what they do and who want to win as badly as I do. Jeff Hurley, iHeartMedia: I think EMPATHY is a trait that great leaders must possess in the year 2023. Our entire team faces unique challenges every day, and we can’t turn a blind eye to the effect those challenges have on people’s daily lives. Guy Zapoleon, Zapoleon Consulting: Give your team credit for a win, be positive and celebrate your wins with the team. Celebrate individual members who made major contributions. When your station loses, place the blame on yourself. Be authentic and stay consistent in what you say, don’t waver in your decisions (right or wrong). |
