Given the importance of pro sporting events in peoples’ lives, does pro sports get too much media attention or is it deserved?
Jonathan Shuford, WRVW: I think the media attention is just right. Especially the last couple of years where we just need something that connects us, unifies us, and helps us escape. We can all get behind our favorite teams in a way that we can’t agree on much of anything else. It’s a hell of a lot better for media to cover sports than who’s anti-vax this week. Valentine, WBHT: There’s way too much hype outside of the games themselves. I don’t care how many millions of dollars this guy makes or if he lost an endorsement deal because he offended somebody. The media eats it all up, but I’m over it. Just play the game and keep the focus on the game. Bartel, WKTU: It’s well deserved. Sports is a great social aspect of life. There is still nothing better than watching or going to a live sporting events. Nick Wize, WFLZ: I live for sports…all deserved! Guy Zapoleon, Zapoleon Consulting: When you check the Top 20 TV shows for 2021 according to Nielson, 18 out of 20 are sporting events: 17 NFL or college football, one Summer Olympics. That tells you all you need to know about its importance to media. It’s the main reason people watch network TV and a big reason people are watching cable as well. |
Mike “OD” O’Donnell, WKRZ: I don’t have a problem with the big events like the Super Bowl or World Series, they get everyone excited, and it becomes a commonality among us all. Buster Satterfield, WIOQ: It’s deserved because of the revenue it can generate. Sporting events also have the power to bring people together or divide them depending on which team or individual they’re for. Joey Brooks, WKSS: I’m a lifelong athlete and a big fan of pro sports, so I’ll take all I can get. Keep it coming! Rick Vaughn, KENZ: I think it’s deserved if it’s generating the media money. Buzz Knight, Buzz Knight Media: We all need a release and the drama of the games gives us just that. It all definitely needs to be put in perspective in the big picture, but it is much needed entertainment. Rod Phillips, iHeartMedia: Yes it gets too much attention and yes it is deserved. I cannot deny it is deserved when I spend so much time paying attention myself. But athletes’ opinions on life, world events and politics absolutely gets too much attention…just play ball please. |
Jagger, KCHZ: Sports is another lane for me to go into to be entertained. Gives me a break at times. Always fun to watch a game. I also like reading about all the drama. Heather Deluca, WSJO: Ah! SPORTS ARE LIFE and should be treated as such, lol. Except for Pickleball…what even is that? Lol. Josh Wolff, WAEB: Live sporting events are massive business for TV networks for a reason, and the ratings are always incredible for big games. It seems like the audience interest level is in a class of its own. Jeff Hurley iHeartMedia: It’s one of the few things we collectively celebrate together. I think that’s why it garners so much attention. Sometimes, it’s a struggle to find compelling story, which is why it feels like oversaturation at times. Lee Abrams mediavisions: It gets all the exposure it deserves. It’s among America’s most powerful and evergreen entertainment sources. Kobe, WUVR: Even though I am a fan, I do see the point that sometimes we make mountains out of molehills. |
