What is your overall assessment of this year’s Grammys, and what were your performance highlights?
Kobi, WNRW/WLGX: Alicia Keys ROCKED it but most of the show was underwhelming to me. Not as much star power as previous years performing on stage.
Jeff Hurley, WLAN: I enjoyed it. Fun performances that highlighted some of the standouts this year. I don’t think there will ever be a completely happy crowd. There’s always genres or singers that are overlooked. But it was fun to watch this year, and that’s really what it’s all about. Rob Roberts, Cumulus Media: It was better than recent years. The Dolly Parton tribute was the highlight of the night and the Dua Lipa and St. Vincent performance was also very good. Matt Johnson, KSLZ: I thought it was disappointing, but it is a must-watch for our business because you have to be informed and be able to talk about it and work it into the context of your content when its relevant to do so.
Jammer, WEZB: It needs to be a little longer! Highlight might have been seeing artist like H.E.R. Carlota Gonzalez, KOMP: I think they’re a joke and completely disrespectful to the rock and metal genres. It’s supposed to be a music night, yet they ignore or completely disrespect rock music. And whether or not they like it, rock and metal is a form of music. Omitting Vinnie Paul from the memoriam was shameful and disgusting.
Matt Talluto, WBYR: The Grammys sucked. The talent of pop/hip hop is at an all-time low. I felt embarrassed for a legend like Dolly Parton to have to stand next to a bunch of hacks during her own tribute. However, though I’m a rock fan who noticed the slight on the entire genre practically, I was impressed by Kacey Musgraves! She’s has legit talent. Producers of the Grammys? They don’t. The bar continues to get lower. |
Mike Miller, WZFT: Good show overall. Alicia Keys was a great host. The highlight was Dan + Shay‘s performance.
Jonathan Reed, WNOK: I can’t get enough of Ariana Grande in my life so when I found out that she wasn’t performing I became instantly disinterested. Todd Shannon, WAPE: Lady Gaga just tore it up. She was amazing! I really enjoyed the job Alicia Keys did as host. She’s always been one of the more likeable and engaging artists, and as host she was great. She wasn’t intrusive, she didn’t offend anyone, she just did her thing. She made the whole broadcast a very comfortable watch. Another highlight was her playing the dual pianos, that was so cool. It truly felt like the entire night was a celebration of music.
Sassy, WKXJ: I thought the show was very entertaining this year, better than the past few years. Alicia Keys did a good job as host and kept things flowing nicely. Cardi B was a highlight. She recently announced her Vegas residency and if that was a taste of what she’s going to do in Vegas, I’m buying my ticket! She knows how to entertain. I was impressed with Brandi Carlile. I’m looking forward to seeing her locally at a festival in September. Janelle Monae was also very good. Chris Michaels, FM100: I thought the Grammys this year were just okay. I did enjoy the performances from Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus, as well as Lady Gaga’s performance. However, I was hoping Bradley Cooper would come out and join her.

Jon Zellner, iHeartMedia: Good show this year. Favorite performances: Kacey Musgraves, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross and Dan + Shay. And anytime Michelle Obama speaks, I’m paying attention! Rick Vaughn, KENZ: I think the right people won. Happy to see Childish Gambino walk out with awards for a ballsy song (and video) that deserved recognition. I was thrilled to see Janelle Monae get a performance spot. The show is way too long. 3 hours 40 minutes to hand out 18 Grammys? And for the love of all that is holy, hide the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Nobody needed to see that. To represent Rock/Alt, how about Imagine Dragons, Foster the People, Portugal the Man, Muse, or twenty one pilots? OK, I can understand no Portugal, since wiping ass with their last trophy. But let’s get current on the Rock side. Gina Gray, WERO: I really enjoyed the Grammys! I loved all the performances and the vibe of the show. Alicia Keys was great! Sue O’Neil, WKSE: Preachy.
Rod Phillips, iHeartMedia: Entertaining show and Kacey Musgraves clearly stole the show…Dan + Shay too, what a performance! Lenny Diana, WAQY/WLZX: If you sign up to Variety’s email list, they send you updates on everything that happens during live events. So if you had a 14-hour day and didn’t want to watch you can go to sleep early, then grab the most import stuff from the emails, and YouTube what is necessary the next morning. It’s the ultimate show condenser. The Grammys were fabulous this year clocking in at a beautiful 15 minutes at 6am the morning after. BTW…J-Lo looked fantastic. |
