In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Trent Reznor hinted that new material from Nine Inch Nails could surface by the end of 2017. Today he announced a new NIN EP, titled Not The Actual Events, will be released one week from today (12/23). The EP features five new tracks and is the first NIN material since 2013’s Hesitation Marks.

In a statement, Reznor says, “It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make.” He also calls it “an unexpected left turn” and “an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story.” Reznor also refers to longtime collaborator Atticus Ross as an “official bandmate” in NIN currently.

Not The Actual Events will be released on one-sided vinyl and “as a physical component,” shipping January 1.

Additionally, the entire Nine Inch Nails back catalog will gradually be reissued on vinyl, starting with 1999’s double album The Fragile. As a 4-LP box set, The Fragile: Deviations 1 will include the entire album, along with instrumental versions, alternate mixes and unreleased tracks. Rezntor says, “The Fragile occupies a very interesting and intimate place in my heart. I was going through a turbulent time in my life when making it and revisiting it has become a form of therapy for me. As an experiment, I removed all the vocals from the record and found it became a truly changed experience that worked on a different yet compelling level. The Fragile: Deviations 1 represents Atticus and I embellishing the original record with a number of tracks from those sessions we didn’t use before. The result paints a complimentary but different picture we wanted to share.”

As for future vinyl reissues, he added, “We want to present the catalog as it was intended to be, with no compromises. That means a careful remastering of the audio from the original sources, a painstaking recreation of the artwork, pristine materials, some surprises and an insane attention to detail that you probably won’t notice…but it matters to us. No extra bullshit and gimmicks — the ‘real’ records in their truest form available at a reasonable price.” The Downward Spiral and the Broken EP are slated to be the next vinyl reissues in the spring of 2017.
