For the second time in under a year, Nine Inch Nails will release a new EP with little warning. At the end of 2016, Trent Reznor dropped the Not the Actual Events EP and teased further releases in the future. This morning it was announced that the follow-up EP, titled Add Violence, will arrive next Friday, July 21. The five-song collection is the second in a series of three related EPs.
According to a release, “The narrative arc linking the three records begins to emerge through the disassociated lyrics and the provocative and clue-filled cover artwork and accompanying physical component.” The mysterious “physical component” with Not the Actual Events turned out to be an envelope of artwork and lyrics covered in black inky powder. Once again, an unknown physical component is available for the Add Violence EP, which will also be sold digitally and on vinyl.
The single “Less Than” was released today and is available for immediate download when you purchase the EP. You can watch the ’80s video game-themed video below:
Nine Inch Nails will headline FYF Fest in Los Angeles on July 23, marking the band’s first live performance since 2014. Headlining slots at Panorama in New York City, Riot Fest in Chicago and Aftershock Fest in Sacramento will follow.
