Justin Timberlake performed a medley of his greatest hits at Sunday night’s Super Bowl halftime show, segueing through “SexyBack,” “Cry Me a River,” “Rock Your Body,” “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and others. JT started his show under the stage and wound up closing it out in the stadium seats and taking selfies with a kid in the crowd.
The most notable and controversial part of Timberlake’s performance was a tribute to Prince. Over the weekend, a rumor started that a Prince hologram would be involved. Prince himself had decried this practice and the late superstar’s estate appeared to nix the idea via tweets. While not a “hologram,” Prince’s image was shown on a giant curtain while Timberlake covered part of “I Would Die 4 U.” Outside the stadium, the city of Minnesota lit up purple in his honor. Fans’ reactions to the tribute were still mixed. However, the Prince estate released a statement today saying, “Justin Timberlake, the NFL, and the City of Minneapolis used the stadium and the city to give a beautiful hometown tribute to Prince. The two pieces of footage that appeared on the screens were licensed from the Purple Rain movie and a vintage performance in Syracuse, NY.”
This morning, Timberlake added a slew of new dates to his Man of the Woods tour, stretching well into 2019. JT will visit Europe and the UK this summer, then play North America from late September into mid-December. He’ll pick up the tour again after the holidays with another month of North American shows in January of 2019.
