WKQX – Chicago

To promote their annual holiday shows, “The Nights We Stole Christmas,” jocks at Chicago’s WKQX interacted via Skype with the headliners from each night. Troy Hanson is dominating that market because of next wave ideas like this. He’s added unique artist content, without having to wait for the band to make a station visit. My favorite is Brian Aubert from Silversun Pickups. As a judge of comedy, I can tell you that Brian’s comedic timing has always been as sharp as a … well, imagine that I’ve written something funny here … it’s as sharp as that.

91X – San Diego

Oceanside is a cool place, it’s like an anime Sin City, and it has one of the coolest piers in California. Recognizing this, 91X decided O-side (cool short form that I invented for Oceanside) would be the perfect place to hold their Homecoming show. I love that this makeshift venue screams what 91X is all about: local, legendary, and left coast (note: please admire the symmetry of using 3 words beginning with “L.” It took me five hours to come up with which ironically makes me another “L” word).

Alt Nation on Sirius Xm – New York

I like that Alt Nation injected some fun into a meet and greet, and they picked the perfect band for it. Most stations treat meet and greets like a diplomat meeting a librarian, but getting Twenty One Pilots to play ping pong with winners is inspired. It’s a fun social media get, plus odd air content that makes a far more compelling listen then straight music stuff.

If you’re doing something cool at your station, let me know: gregbeharrell@live105.com.
If you work for a Hot AC station, I’d like to know why it has to be Hot AC. Why not Smart AC, or Successful AC, or AC that’s a good mother.

Love (of course it’s me saying it first), Greg Beharrell
