Green Day will release Revolution Radio, the band’s first new record since 2012, on October 7. Lead single “Bang Bang” arrived at radio this morning.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong discussed the new material, which he says was inspired by the sociopolitical issues of today. “Bang Bang” is “about the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media. There’s this sort of rage happening, but it’s also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted. To get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get that out of my brain because it just freaked me out.”
Revolution Radio is Green Day’s first record since Armstrong’s rehab stint, as well as battles with cancer for both bassist Mike Dirnt’s wife, Brittney and the group’s touring guitarist Jason White. Armstrong says the issues surrounding Green Day in recent years indirectly affecting his writing, telling Rolling Stone that, “I don’t feel like I ever tried to write something in specific about them, but obviously I think as time goes on you start to go, ‘Holy s***. Life is happening and it can get really intense.’ So I think that’s probably in the record, I would imagine. But I would never be as shallow as to write a song about someone’s family crisis or anything.”
Green Day is currently rehearsing and mapping out a world tour in support of Revolution Radio.
