DJ and electronic music producer Avicii (aka Tim Bergling) has passed away at the age of 28. His publicist released a statement this afternoon saying, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”
The Swedish musician rode the wave of EDM starting in 2011 and earned two Grammy nominations, while winning trophies at the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards and MTV Europe Music Awards during his career. Avicii became one of the top names in the EDM touring world and released two albums (2013’s True and 2015’s Stories). He also remixed tracks for a wide variety of artists.
Avicii retired from touring in 2016 due to health problems, including pancreatitis, which was partially caused due to his drinking. His gallbladder and appendix were removed in 2014.
In 2017, he had posted a statement on his website saying he had been working on new music in the studio.
