Shock G

Rapper Shock G (real name Gregory Jacobs) of Digital Underground has passed away at the age of 57. Best known for his alter ego of “Humpty Hump,” the group scored a massive hit with “The Humpty Dance” in 1990 and went on to have a number of successful releases. Shock G joined drummer/producer Chopmaster J to form the Underground and released their debut album Sex Packets in 1990. Focusing on playful lyrics and mixing funk influences with rap music, the group quickly carved out their place in the ’90s hip-hop scene and released six albums throughout their career. They even made a cameo in the 1991 Dan Aykroyd film Nothing But Trouble.

Famously, Tupac Shakur was a member of Digital Underground for a time and when he went solo, Shock G mentored him and worked closely with the late star on his music. He co-produced Tupac’s debut album 2Pacalypse Now and appeared on his 1993 single “I Get Around.”

“34 years ago almost to the day we had a wild idea we can be a hip-hop band and take on the world through it all the dream became a reality and the reality became a nightmare for some,” Chopmaster J wrote on Instagram. “And now he’s awaken from the fame long live shock G Aka Humpty Hump and Rest In Peace my Brotha Greg Jacobs!!! #digitalunderground.”
