Coleman Insights is offering free access to a sortable spreadsheet containing song-by-song data from its Contemporary Music SuperStudy 2. This year’s study evaluates the appeal of 2019’s most consumed songs according to MRC Data/BDSradio with 1,000 12- to 54-year-olds across the United States and Canada. The test utilizes Coleman Insights’ FACT360SM Strategic Music Test platform.

Visitors to the Free Studies section at the company’s website, ColemanInsights.com, can now view how each song was evaluated by listeners, with breakdowns by age, gender, ethnicity, fans of each genre, streaming listeners and AM/FM listeners. That section also includes the more detailed analyses of Coleman Insights released earlier this year.

This year’s study’s major findings include:

  • Pop is the best-testing genre, followed by Country and Hip Hop/R&B;
  • Country’s share of the 100 most popular contemporary songs has nearly doubled from last year;
  • Daily radio listeners prefer Pop and Country, while daily streaming listeners have many more Hip Hop/R&B titles in their Top 100;
  • “Shape Of You” by Ed Sheeran is the best-testing title, while “Baby Shark” is the worst-testing;
  • Supporters of President Trump have an overwhelming preference for Country, while supporters of Vice President Biden prefer Pop, followed closely by Hip Hop/R&B.

Coleman Insights President Warren Kurtzman notes, “We’re pleased to once again offer the industry free access to this study. Programmers should remember not to make any music decisions based on this data but we encourage them to use it to ensure that many of the stronger-testing songs in their stations’ formats are included in any customized music research they do.”
