Red Hot Chili Peppers will be honored at the 2022 MTV VMAs with the Global Icon Award, celebrating the veteran band’s career and accomplishments.
The Global Icon Award celebrates an artist or band “whose unparalleled career, continued impact, and influence have maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the music landscape.” Previous recipients include Janet Jackson, U2, Green Day, Eminem, and more. Last year, the honor went to Foo Fighters.
This will be the Chili Peppers’ return to the VMA stage for the first time since 2000, when they received the Video Vanguard Award. The band will also perform at the VMAs, marking their fourth overall performance on the annual awards show. The Chilis are nominated in the Best Rock category for “Black Summer.” They’ve won eight VMAs overall throughout their career.
Red Hot Chili Peppers will also release their second studio album of 2022, Return of the Dream Canteen, on October 14. They are currently on a stadium tour of North America.
This year’s VMAs will return to New Jersey’s Prudential Center in Newark on Sunday, August 28.
