Bruno Mars
The 60th annual Grammy Awards, held in New York City on Sunday night, were filled with a diverse and talented pack of performers, tributes and nominees. While Hip-Hop artists such as Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar led the list of nominees, in the end, U2’s Bono and The Edge presented the coveted trophy for Album of the Year to Bruno Mars for his throwback opus, 24K Magic.
Mars had a huge night overall, winning in all the major categories. In addition to Album of the Year, he also took home trophies for Song of the Year for “That’s What I Like,” Record of the Year for “24K Magic,” Best R&B Album for 24K Magic, and Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song for “That’s What I Like.”
Kendrick Lamar went in to the night with seven nominations and he came away with four trophies. Lamar won Best Rap Album for DAMN, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Humble,” and Best Rap/Sung Performance for “Loyalty” featuring Rihanna.
Ed Sheeran earned two awards this year, including Best Pop Solo Performance for “Shape of You” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Divide. Portugal. The Man‘s infectious hit “Feel It Still” nabbed the trophy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, while Alessia Cara took home the prize for Best New Artist.
In the Rock categories, Leonard Cohen posthumously won Best Rock Performance for “You Want It Darker” while Foo Fighters received Best Rock Song for “Run.” Mastodon earned Best Metal Performance for “Sultan’s Curse,” and The War On Drugs‘ acclaimed album A Deeper Understanding won the award for Best Rock Album.
Some of the highlight live performances at the 60th annual Grammys included Bruno Mars and Cardi B with their colorful, ’80s throwback version of “Finesse;” Childish Gambino‘s smooth and slinky rendition of “Terrified;” Sting and Shaggy with a mashed-up take on “Englishman In New York” and “Don’t Make Me Wait;” Kesha‘s sincere and powerful rendition of “Praying” where she was joined by Cyndi Lauper, Camila Cabello, Julia Michaels, Andra Day and others; and U2 performing on a boat on the Hudson River as they played “Get Out of Your Own Way” in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty.
