The 2020 Emmy nominations are out and a variety of musicians are up for the annual TV awards. Most notably, Beastie Boys Story on AppleTV+, the filming of the live stage show where the two surviving Beasties tell the story of the group, was nominated five times. Beastie Boys Story is up for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program and Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails were nominated twice for their work on HBO‘s Watchmen, for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie or Special and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics (for “The Way It Used to Be”). Watchmen led the pack for this year’s Emmys, with 26 nominations in total.
The other nominees in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category include Pharrell for “Letter To My Godfather” from The Black Godfather, a documentary on music industry pioneer Clarence Avant, along with British singer-songwriter Labrinth for “All For Us” from Euphoria, Ingrid Michaelson for “Build It Up” from Little Fires Everywhere, and Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith and composer Siddhartha Khosla for “Memorized” from This Is Us.
RZA earned a nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for Hulu‘s Wu-Tang Clan documentary, Wu-Tang: An American Saga. And Kamasi Washington‘s score for Michelle Obama‘s documentary Homecoming is up for Outstanding Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special.
The 2020 Emmys will be handed out September 20 on ABC.
