What’s the strongest message radio can send its listeners regarding its ongoing entertainment value to them?
Justin Chase, Beasley Media Group: Perfect question for the moment we’re in today. As our listeners are coming out of quarantine, we all need to be resetting our brand proposition. Obviously, each station will have their own value proposition depending on their position in the market. But in general, radio’s value is its entertaining personalities, the connection we have to the community, and even the fact that radio is FREE. Most station’s overlook the “free” image but it’s one of the top reasons people choose to use radio. In a difficult economy, when consumers are having to cut household expenses (including music subscriptions), free is an advantage we should embrace. Buster Satterfield, Q102: It’s 100 percent FREE! Mike “OD” O’Donnell, WKRZ: We’re live, local, and by your side. We have to reinforce our companionship position with them, stay close to them. We’re not a streaming service or jukebox. We have a personality that’s custom made for our community. Java Joel, WAKS: We are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And always “on-demand” via iHeartRadio. Oh- and we’re free too! Mike “OD” O’Donnell, WKRZ: We’re live, local, and by your side. We have to reinforce our companionship position with them, stay close to them. We’re not a streaming service or jukebox. We have a personality that’s custom made for our community. Bob Patrick, WXLK: Live and Local. Rinse. Repeat. It really is that simple for us. I’ll also mention that we don’t charge for ad free music from time to time. Kevin Kash, WWEG: We’re free, we’re live and we’re local. (the last two if applicable). |
R Dub! Z90: I don’t think any messaging…we’re beyond that. It’s about walking the walk at this point. Orlando, WLLD: Radio has to let listeners know “we’re on this bus with you! Equality, COVID, to Kanye! Trust we’re watching and praying too! Rick Vaughn, KENZ: To be fiercely local and loyal! Adam Rivers, WKCI: We’ll be here for you when no one else will. Jonathan Shuford, WRVW: We’re your friend. The differentiating factor for radio continues to be that we are local and we are living the same life that you are. Toby Knapp, WASH: That we are real people, vulnerable, authentic and that we’re going through and facing the same highs and lows just like they are. Our connection – which lives between songs and into stopsets – is real, and tangible… and can’t be automated or faked with an algorithm…because it’s human. That humanity… is the key to our survival and continued success. Valentine, WBHT: As your local station we’re experiencing these difficult times with you. We need to humanize the talent as much as possible and make sure we’re keeping it real as we relate to the audience. They need to feel our presence and know that we’re all in this together. Matt Johnson, KSLZ: Pop culture is very cyclical and I think when people are scared about the real world they need “entertainment” in their entertainment. That’s when the novelty tends to work and the escapism. Often times CHR will sound big and wide again and we need to augment the overall vibe every so often and really make it as special as we can. |
Josh Wolff, WAEB: We need to be a release for them from the daily stress of life and continue to provide companionship. We have to be a positive distraction and reinforce the fact that we’re very relatable to them and their needs right now. Chris Michaels, FM100: Radio has always been about companionship. Now more than ever, we need that to escape everything that’s happening! Jordan, KSLZ: We’re still here. Sure, we do well as an escape, but sometimes our listeners are looking for more than an escape. They’re looking for a connection. We’re still here for, and with them. Jagger WKSS: We’re always here for you and try to put a smile on your face and play your favorite music. Jon Zellner, iHeartMedia: Things we should be doing daily: promoting and taking ownership of the music we play, running recycler promos from our morning shows and setting specific appointments for unique content that stands out. Dom Theodore, Radio Animal Media Strategies: ACTUALLY entertaining them with interesting and compelling content! Bartel, WKTU: We’re right by your side more than ever with great personalities and the best music. Kobe, @kobeontheradio: That we are always with them, and whatever is going on in the world we’re going through the same thing at the same time. |
