XXXTentacion

Rapper XXXTentacion has died at the age of 20 following a shooting incident Monday afternoon in Florida. According to reports, he was in his car after shopping for motorcycles in Deerfield Beach, FL, when two individuals with guns approached him. He was shot, rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department says the incident was possibly a robbery and that a Louis Vuitton bag was taken from his vehicle. However, there is no official motive and as of this morning, no arrests had been made.

XXXTentacion (real name: Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy) built a fan base online over the past three years, sending his 2017 album 17 to #2 and this year’s ? to #1. His lo-fi recordings mixed hip hop with rock and other genres while he talked frankly about mental illness and depression.

However, the rapper’s short career was surrounded by controversy and legal troubles. In 2017, he went to jail on charges of false imprisonment, witness tampering and aggravated battery of his pregnant girlfriend. His live performances were known for violent incidents as well. XXXTentacion was still facing a possible lengthy prison sentence due to the domestic violence charges, among others. He was under house arrest recently too but allowed out to tour. And just last month, his music was taken off Spotify‘s promoted playlists due to his assault charges, then faced a backlash for the decision, restoring his songs to the streaming service.
