Lorde has been slowing teasing a new album for some time now and now has confirmed her third record, Solar Power, is due out later this year. The lead single/title track’s artwork was revealed a few days ago, then the song itself leaked early so the song and its video formally arrived yesterday. “Solar Power” is her first new music in four years, since 2017’s album Melodrama. Lorde co-directed the video and co-wrote the song with the prolific Jack Antinoff.

In her newsletter, Lorde wrote, “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors.” She continued, “In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

The video was filmed on a beach in her native New Zealand and in an interview with Triple J, she confirmed that more videos were already shot for Solar Power on the same beach. She added, “Every song on the album, I did say it has to sound like the sun, and this one in a big way. It sounds like the beach, the waves, the girls lying on the beach. I really wanted it to have that vibe. The guitars, the drums – everything’s so sunny.”
