Who is your favorite all-time radio personality and what qualities do you admire most about him/her?
 Orlando, WLLD: Tom Joyner was my guy in middle school, because I had no idea radio was so dope. When in the industry, WiLD 107’s JoJo On The Radio and Hot 97’s Angie Martinez because both said and did what fans would in that chair.. Can’t ever beat that.
Toby Knapp, WASH: It would be radio sacrilege for me to name just one. These men and women are the giants of our platform… and we as a generation stand on their shoulders and follow down the trails they blazed for us. If you are a true fan of big personality radio… you know who they are, what they’ve done and what in many cases, they still do. Kobi, WNRW/WLGX: Kannon has the quickest, most random wit of anyone I have ever met! He can tell a story in less than :10 seconds and that always amazes me!
Rick Vaughn, Power 94.9: I loved listening to Greaseman tell a story. Mike “OD” O’Donnell, WKRZ: Dale Dorman when he was doing afternoon drive on KISS 108/Boston. He was one of the tightest, brightest that I ever heard. He never missed a post. He made what he did sound so simple, but it really wasn’t. We all know that the art of sounding simple and effective is not very easy, and he sounded dynamite. He was the reason why I’m in radio today. Jonathan Shuford, WRVW: Definitely Scott Shannon, and part of it is because he got his start at WABB, which is where I started as well. He was so inventive as a jock and in his programming style. I also thought that Bob & Tom back in the day we’re brilliant.
Tony Waitekus, WHTQ: Larry Lujack on both WLS and WCFL. He was one of the best. Matt Talluto, WYBR: Howard Stern and how he gets everyone to talk about ANYTHING!

R Dub! Z90: So hard to pick just one, I have so many favorites! But I’d have to go with Kevin “Slow Jammin’” James. His one-on-one communication to the listener and attachment to the music he plays is second to none.
Paul Kelly, WWAC: Casey Kasem is my #1. He’s the reason I wanted to be on the radio. I loved the way he told stories and made every song and every artist seem important. He made the artists seem relatable to the listener by telling stories about them as people. Casey also never gave his opinion on songs because he was smart enough to know that any song he is playing is SOMEBODY’S favorite. I’ve had Casey on one of my stations every year since 1994!
Kobe, WWHT: Tone E Fly. His energy, and wit are legendary. He also used a bit idea I sent him when I was in market 285, and I heard him use it when I was streaming KDWB. Best moment ever for a young jock! Jimmy Steal, Power 106: Howard Stern, unfortunately for radio, is a one of a kind talent. He understands the medium like no other, and is simply the best interviewer on the planet.
Terry Stevens, WOZZ: Three words: Gary…freaking…Burbank. Boundless creativity, a cast of memorable characters and bits (Gilbert Gnarley, Earl Pitts, Eunice & Bernice, All My Bengals) and a billion catch phrases that stay with me to this day. (“How’s mom n ’em?” “You must be off.”) In addition to that, he’s a good guy who spent hours at our local broadcasting school sharing a lifetime of radio knowledge with a bunch of punk kids. |
 Java Joel, WAKS: Howard Stern. A true innovator. Brave, bold. True pioneer. Anyone who questions his abilities needs to listen to The Howard Stern Show from 9/11/01. To call him a mere “shock jock” is unfair. He’s a consummate broadcaster and can out-interview anyone on NPR or anywhere else. A radio genius! (Bill Lee, Jackson Armstrong, Terry Young, Larry Lujack, JoJo Cookin’ Kincaid and Dale Dorman are also in my Top 10)
Chris K, 106.5 The End: I always loved listening to Casey Kasem when I was a kid. I feel in love with the countdown and music in general starting with him. I still love doing my year-end countdown every year, it reminds me of the old days with Casey.
Paul “Cubby” Bryant, WKTU: Impossible to pick one, so I’m picking two. (LOL). Elvis Duran and Broadway Bill Lee. I remember hearing tapes of them before I got to New York and immediately being thankful that I picked radio as my career, so inspiring. Fish Boy, WKRZ: For me it’s always Wolfman Jack. He was a pioneer, such a true original…he was this bigger than life figure. Chris Michaels, FM100: Paul “Cubby” Bryant. He is so natural and smooth.
Brian Michel, iHeartMedia / Atlanta: Adam Carolla, honesty, wit, and a bit of crankiness. Max Volume, KOZZ: The Firesign Theater on KPFK! Roxy Myzal: Howard Stern. Great interviews. The best. Jonathan Reed, WNOK: Love listening to old air checks of Elvis Duran in afternoons and Chio The Hitman at night on Z100/New York. And Broadway Bill Lee‘s posts from the WCBS studios are fun. |
Brian Mack, WXXL: Elvis Duran and Ken Dashow. Lots of history, genuine delivery and their interaction with everyone around them.
Jason Squires, KFRR: Magic Matt Allen – everything Top 40 radio was to me growing up and Ted Stryker – sells the alternative format/lifestyle on-air like no other.
Kevin Kash, WIYY: I have several. Howard Stern, Don & Mike, and Greaseman. They were original and kept it fun.
Skywalker, WSPK: Elvis Duran has been the epitome of a perfect jock from high energy PM drive to a great communicator and interviewer in AM Drive.
Mike McVay, Cumulus Media: My response would be about past talent and not current talent as we have so many great talent at Westwood One and at Cumulus. I was greatly influenced listening to Charlie Tuna when we worked together on Ten Q in LA. He was clever and yet efficient in what and how he delivered a line. Jack Armstrong, also at Ten Q, taught me how to put on a show.
Rob Roberts, WRQX: John Records Landecker, because Records truly is his middle name and I wanted to be him when I first started this game.
Alex Tear, Y100 / iHeartMedia Miami: Radio pronounciator DJ Scott Shannon. Pioneer, Mentor, Legend.
Dom Theodore, Radio Animal Media Strategies: All-time favorite is still Casey Kasem. He was a great story teller, and was one of the nicest and most humble people that I’ve ever met.
