Justin Timberlake will headline the 2018 Super Bowl halftime show. The announcement was made during Sunday Night Football via a promo video starring JT and his old friend Jimmy Fallon.
Of course, Timberlake infamously was a part of the Super Bowl halftime show back in 2004, as part of the “wardrobe malfunction” Janet Jackson performance. The so-called “nipplegate” controversy touched off a firestorm of debate over indecency in broadcasting as well as FCC fines for CBS. Timberlake was also a performer at the Super Bowl back in 2001 as a member of N*SYNC.
Speaking to Mike Tirico on Sunday Night Football, Timbelake said there would be no repeat of the incident, saying, “no, Mike, that’s not going to happen.” He added that “What I really want to do is take the opportunity to put together a performance that feels like it unifies. I feel like that would be the ultimate accomplishment, and then the icing on the cake is at some point, within that 12 minutes, that everybody is shaking their booty.”
Sources also tell Variety that Timberlake is working on a new album that could arrive in the first quarter of 2018.
Super Bowl LII is set for February 4, 2018 in Minneapolis and will air on NBC. Watch Timberlake and Fallon’s announcement video below:
