In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Beck confirms that his long-delayed next record Colors will be out in October. Originally expected to see release in 2016, the Grammy-winning musician says “I suppose the record could have come out a year or two ago. But these are complex songs all trying to do two or three things at once. It’s not retro and not modern. To get everything to sit together so it doesn’t sound like a huge mess was quite an undertaking.”
Beck made the album with producer/songwriter Greg Kurstin, who has hit it big working with artists such as Adele and Sia. However, the two musicians go way back, as Kurstin played keyboards in Beck’s band in the early ’00s. Beck said that the two of them played essentially every instrument on Colors. “Between the two of us, we can play everything, and we don’t have to go through the filter of other people.”
Rolling Stone describes the mood of songs such as “Fix Me” and “Up All Night” as “relentlessly upbeat.” It is unknown for now if previously released tracks “Dreams” (2015) and “Wow” (2016) will make the cut on Colors.
