The Buzz – Houston
The Buzz in Houston had a fun contest planned for a cash giveaway: Fill Your Face. The “making people do something for a prize” thing is always solid, but having their midday girl, Theresa, actually do it on camera is brave, and – oddly – endearing due to that bravery. They’ve also encouraged listeners to send in videos of themselves filling their faces, so bonus points for the mass interaction. I think it’s fun when DJs put themselves in a position to be laughed at, other than that moment we announced to family and friends “I’m choosing radio as a career.”

WKQX – Chicago
WKQX in Chicago spent a few days in March posting blurred versions of the poster for their big summer concert, and a reminder that all will be revealed on Monday at 9am. The appointment listening bit is smart, but the buzz in the comments section is what’s priceless. Listeners were squinting and trying to make out the band names. Reminds me of the fun before Internet spoilers. Blurry uncertainty is no longer just for radio’s future.

Channel 93.3 – Denver
KTCL in Denver has a fun promo/bit called LOL. It really has the makings of a solid benchmark, and there’s quite an archive online to revisit. One big selling point is the strong comedic read that hits (or misses) every beat it needs to, but a large part of that success is due to the left-of-center script that drips the demo’s sarcasm. I’ve always said the best radio talents are skilled when it comes to righting.
